Ellie Csepregi writes in layers with these poems seemingly part of cakes, her inspiration.  From the poem “Tarte Tatin”:  “You should be a sculpture. Your body is so perfect – an art- / ist’s dream. Why aren’t you a sculpture or at least a sculptor?”  Each poem is titled after a cake or dessert.  It will make you hunger for more when you read the poems.  Her poems have a great deal of awareness and she varies them between free verse and prose.  The reader will have fun unpeeling each meaning under each verse.  Her poems are passionate, enchanting and enticing.

Icing

It is a time of decline.
And there is something about your voice
that is bright and cruel
like the portrait of a
rook against the
prairie sweep
recalling the time we converged on a glass lake
and dazzled a tragedy of quarrels.
Those were not words of compassion.
And now years later
we face each other
both of us faded.
We speak politely
picturing past encounters.
We dare not utter
a phrase.
