In his 9th book with his publisher, Cyberwit, Robert L. Martin states that this new publication “explains in poetic metaphors what a flowing is. It explains the source of the flow and what it is like to be in the flowing. It takes you on a journey to find out what is on my mind.” This is the kind of poetry collection that doesn’t try to overtake you with complex language and/or hidden meanings. Martin deems to invite readers into his world of everyday reflections, quiet observations as well as honest inspiration. He even invites the reader to “enjoy the ride” in the introduction to his book.

          Having written 2,700 poems plus he is obviously filled with imagination and the skills to write them down and get them on the page. His way of writing is indeed approachable and reading his poems is almost as if you are listening to someone familiar share their thoughts with you.

          Poems are easy to dive into with many of them lingering in your thoughts after reading each one. Simplicity and connecting are two of the ways Martin shows his strengths as a poet and writer. He uses direct language and also his images are clear which makes everything relatable.

          From the poem “Midnight Gold Dust”

Midnight gold dust, nocturnal gems,

prospector’s dream,

aerial excavations, eureka soundings,

mythical phenomenons inside sacred fields,

stars multiplying a thousandfold

from narrow prisons into infinite spaces,

and mellifluous streaming from

the mouth of the colossal sky-hawks,

beautiful illuminations

after the sinking of the sun

and the veil of night is lifted

to expose the expansive yards.

Martin’s straightforward approach is one of the most endearing and defining qualities of the book. The book’s title as well as the title poem suggests a willingness to adapt, to move, to perhaps travel wherever life leads. That spirit carries through the entire collection almost encouraging readers to appreciate what’s around them or to slow down.

Rider of the flow I am, I am

in rhyming streams, aye a journeyman,

a harbinger sent from the muse of verse,

filled up full of words until they burst.

This is a collection that offers the reader a contemporary poetry experience and one that most anyone can enjoy. His verse is accessible but also offers deep insights into the world. This book of poems is as authentic as the poet who wrote them.
